a.k.a. Minou, Gros minou, Cream Puff, killer
Cream Puff, our neighbour’s kitten would come in our yard and climb our trees. Our dog Winzor liked him and would go play with him. They were born just two weeks apart. The neighbours were moving and wanted to get rid of him. He was just 6 months old and since Winzor liked him so much we decided to take him. Best deal ever!
The name did not suit him since he was such a big kitten, so we renamed him Kreamer. He was twice the size of the other kittens in his litter and we were told that he would push off his siblings to get more of his mother’s milk which caused two of them to die from lack of nutrition.
Kreamer and Winzor would play together regularly and always remained good friends often sleeping together. After Kreamer got neutered he started gaining weight and would sometimes eat some of Winzor’s food. Before we knew it he got really big, 28 pounds big. Kreamer and Winzor at 140 pounds were the perfect match, the oversize cat and dog.
He liked going outside but because we live beside a highway, we tied him up to a 65 foot cord to keep him in the yard. For a huge cat he could move pretty fast even pulling his cord. He was very good at catching mice and liked to play with them before having a snack. We eventually fenced the backyard and dug a pond. He then had the freedom to roam around freely which he loved summer or winter. Kreamer was a great swimmer whenever my wife would bring him to the middle of the pond. He did not like it as much as the dogs but he wasn’t afraid of it either.
Kreamer was a very smart cat. It took him less than 2 minutes to learn to sit and give paw on command among others he learned. Whenever we asked him if he wanted to go outside he would reply with “da-ahh” which sounded a lot like how we pronounce “dehors” in French. This was the only time he would use that certain pitch in his voice. He would also answer us when spoken to. He must have been able to tell time too because he always showed up on time for every feeding.
He loved to play with some toys but mostly with just a shoe lace. In his later years he did not go out as much when it got very cold so he started sitting on my lap and we watched mouse and bird videos and he played cat games on the touch screen laptop.
Kreamer got along well with all our dogs and they all respected him. He did not like Bochi the first time he met him, giving the little puppy a few paws to the head. Bochi grew on him and they became good friends. It was always funny to see Kreamer rub himself on one of the dogs or just walk under them instead of going around. Bochi and Winburg would always finish eating before him. They would sit and watch him eat hoping he would leave them something which he rarely did.
His favourite food was the Royal Canine Dental kibble which is not good food nutrition wise but we still gave him a few every day as a treat. He loved fresh chicken and would hang out with the dogs whenever I prepared some waiting for a little taste. He would purr loudly to make sure that I knew he was there. He also loved meat lover pizza. He would sit beside me whenever I ate some and he would actually drool, something he learned from Winburg. He always had first dibs at licking my plate.
Kreamer was mostly a loner and would chase off some of the neighbourhood male cats. There were a couple of female cats he liked and they would come and hang out with him until the dogs went out and scared them off. He did not like other humans and would go hide whenever someone would visit us.
Kreamer had dozens of different places around the house and garage he liked to sleep in. Some of his favourite was curling up in the bathroom sink or beside a window. He would sometimes come in bed with us even if the dogs were already there. He had different tactics to wake up my wife if he wanted to go out, did I mention he was smart.
The house is not the same without Kreamer. We miss our special cat a lot and will never forget him. Before he passed we told him to go find his best friend Winzor and wait for us. Then we sang him his favourite Supertramp song.
Kreamer, you know you are a dreamer
Well can you put your paws in your head, oh no…
